This analysis consolidates evidence from more than ten years of Reuters Institute studies to illuminate contemporary young audiences. Understanding generational transitions is essential for the news industry's financial viability, which relies on a continuous stream of younger consumers who repeatedly return to news content. It also holds significance for our societies' democratic well-being, which demands that all citizens, including youth, stay informed and collectively maintain fundamental world understanding. Studies consistently demonstrate that news engagement enhances political involvement, improves current events knowledge, and strengthens resistance to false information, among other advantages (e.g. Altay et al. 2023; Mont’Alverne et al. 2024; Oser and Boulianne 2020).
The catch is that these methods operate in what the research team calls post-RoPE space. RoPE, or Rotary Position Embedding, is the positional encoding scheme used by most modern LLMs including Llama, Qwen, and Mistral. RoPE encodes position by rotating the Query and Key vectors in a frequency-dependent way. As a result, a query vector at position 10,000 looks very different from the same semantic query at position 100, because its direction has been rotated by the position encoding.
